About the Workshop

This immersive one-day workshop takes along the Bold Coast from Cutler to West Quoddy, some of the most rugged and spectacular coastline in Maine. . We'll take you to the hidden gems, the off-the-beaten-path locations, and show you how to match mood and moment to help tell the story of this amazing place. You may leave the Bold Coast, but it will never leave you.

Whether you're just starting out or refining years of experience, we'll tailor the instruction to where you are in your photography journey. The day is packed full of time in the field, going over the most efficient settings to capture images the way you want to make them, no cookie-cutter formulas. Post-workshop group image reviews round out the experience, offering thoughtful, constructive feedback and the chance to see the world through your fellow participants' eyes. The goal: to inspire you, help you sharpen your personal vision and come home with images you're truly proud of.

No! You can make great images right away with simple equipment, and that’s what this workshops aim to teach you. If you have photographed before and aim to update yourself on the latest techniques in digital photography, this is definitely for you. What does the itinerary look like?

Our itinerary can and will change due to the weather and other factors. Our goal is to get you in the best possible locations to match the conditions. That said, here’s an idea of what our day might look like.

  • Sunrise Photoshoot: We will most likely meet early in the morning, near 4:45 AM, to capture sunrise. If the conditions are cloudy or rainy, we’ll be meeting later.

  • Breakfast: We’ll have a group breakfast.

  • Afternoon Classroom Time: We’ll meet for a post-processing session along with image reviews to help you make the best of your images, and inspire you with the work of your fellow participants.

  • Late Lunch/ Early Dinner: We’ll have another group meal before heading out for our final evening photoshoot.

  • Sunset Photoshoot: We’ll photograph sunset or evening light before wrapping up the workshop after sunset, likely around 8:00 PM.

Possible locations might include but are not limited to:

  • West Quoddy Head Lighthouse

  • Lubec Harbor

  • Cutler Harbor

  • Boot Cove

  • Bog Brook

What are the fitness requirements?

Minimal: There will be some walking required on this workshop. Most locations are close to the car, but there is the possibility of a longer walk through the woods at a nature preserve to photograph the coastal maritime forest if the weather is cloudy or foggy. A pair of sturdy hiking boots are recommended.

What equipment do you recommend I bring?

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera

  • Lenses to cover 16-200mm on a full frame sensor are recommended, 10-150mm on a crop sensor.

  • A sturdy tripod and ballhead

  • Circular polarizing filter

  • Waterproof camera bag (a shoulder bag is not recommended)

  • Waterproof covering for your camera and lens

  • Laptop Computer with editing software, preferably Adobe Lightroom Classic

  • Card Reader if your computer doesn’t have one

  • Extra Batteries

  • Extra Memory Cards

What about transportation?

Flights: We recommend flying into Bangor (BGR) or Portland, Maine (PWM).

Car Rentals and Carpooling: Participants will need their own transportation to to and from the workshop. On the day of the workshop, we encourage carpooling to reduce our environmental impact, the amount of space we take up, and especially to encourage camaraderie and fun times with other participants. Arrangements can be made ahead of time if you indicate a willingness to be a driver/passenger.

What about lodging?

We recommend lodging at the Eastland Motel in Lubec, though many options for Airbnb’s and other small inns exist in the area. Depending on the weather, we’ll most likely meet Friday morning at 4:45 AM at West Quoddy Lighthouse, so the closer you are, the more sleep and less driving you can expect.

What should I wear?

  • Temperatures along the Bold Coast in August range from cool 50’s, especially on the water, to sometimes very warm days near 90 degrees. For that reason we recommend bringing a range of clothing from shorts and short sleeves to long pants and long sleeve shirts along with sweaters and a light jacket.

  • Sturdy Hiking Shoes for grip and balance on rocks

  • Waterproof and Windproof Shell

  • Bug Spray (mosquitoes can be present in a few locations, ticks are rare but possible)

What happens if the weather doesn’t cooperate?

  • We’re experts at predicting and taking advantage of every kind of weather. It’s been said, and we wholeheartedly agree, that bad weather can be good weather for landscape photography. Safety will remain a top priority.
